About “international” streaming on Disney+

Following the 2021 worldwide agreement and consecutive screenings of Macross movies around Asia and the Anglosphere, a global streaming of the franchise on Disney+ was announced back in March 2024, by both the service and Big West, and scheduled for the same year. The roll out effectively started a few months later in Japan (in summer if I remember correctly), progressively reached some Asian and English-speaking territories and then ended with the US release on Hulu. Subtitles are available in three languages : English, Chinese and Korean. No dub.

Surprisingly, there's some misconception about this streaming. It was supposed to be worldwide but it's definitely not. Let's be clear : Macross content is currently available on Disney+ in Japan and some Asian and English-speaking territories only. That's more or less 20 countries when the service is active in more than 100. As I said above, the last roll out was for the US back in January 2025. We don't know when, or even if Disney+ and Big West are planning to expand the availability elsewhere and add more languages.

Supposedly they might be working on it, as briefly implied by Big West international content strategy producer Takamitsu Kayahara during the last Anime Expo Macross panel back in July 2025.
